How much has your hydro bill jumped lately?
Here in Ontario, there’s been a ton of posturing over the state of hydro bills.
Amid talk of ballooning rates, the Liberals were raked over the coals last summer for slapping the HST on the consumer cost of hydro. Then, in November, they were applauded for promising to cut bills by up to 10 per cent. The move was said to be a “jolt (to) the Liberals’ political fortunate with a provincial election set for Oct. 6, 2011.”
But really, who cares? Outside of election time, all Canadians care about is getting the cheapest hydro. Period. And a new report that says increased Ontario rates will raise electricity bills by only 30 cents a month prompts us to ask: has anyone else noticed their hydro bill jump by far more than the projected rate?
By the Ontario Energy Board’s figures, the average hydro bill should only rise by about 30 cents each month because of recent rate increases, yet I’m sure there’s a good amount of Canadians that might balk at such a forecast.
The HST, which applied a 13 per cent tax to monthly hydro usage rather than the 5 per cent levied before July 1, 2010, is nothing new to many Canadian provinces, but for those in Ontario and B.C. it’s been a nightmare in this regard.
Though, even when the HST is thrown out, pre-tax hydro costs seem to have spiked from this same time last year.
My own sky-high bill came in a few weeks ago: $499.43 for 3833 kWh of hydro use in December and January (I have electric heating in my apartment, so it’s always a little pricy in the winter months). Compare that with a $360.22 charge for the same bill the year before and, even though a slightly higher tally of 4116 kWh was used then, these numbers don’t appear to jive.
If we throw out tax, which jumped to 13 per cent on my most current bill from the 5 per cent charged on last year’s, I’ve still paid $434.50 for 3833 kWh of usage in 2011 (or 8.3 cents per kWh) and only $342.21 for 4116 kWh of usage in 2010 (or 11.3 cents per kWh). This is, as I like to call it, the “Fork over an extra $4 to see Drive Angry ‘cause it’s in 3D” effect. Pay more for less.
And I can’t imagine I’m alone.
Even accounting for on-peak/mid-peak/off-peak usage times, customer plans and the like, have you noticed your hydro bill spike compared to a year earlier? If so, by how much?

My hydro bill also went up 100% over last year. And the bill shows that most of our hydro was used in off peak hours!

Hi there,
Forget the increase to the hydro bill. How about asking this question: Why is the charge to deliver gas or electricty to my home the most expensive thing on the bill? For example, I used $40 of gas, and it took just as much to deliver to my home. There are 3 delivery charges on my Enbridge bil! Again, I'll pay 30 cents more every month, but it's the other charges that upset me.

Just wait till our fearless (misguided, stupid a more accurate description) leader Mr McGuinty will eliminate the cheap and reliable coal power generators an replace them with wind and solar power generators. Yes, next time around we will be voting in the dark.

Hydro bill increased by more then 100% over same period last year. Sooner McGuinty is gone the better. Tories only need to promise to fix the hydro situation and they will be the next Ontario government.

the only way to contain the runaway increased cost of electricity, is by doing away with whatever electrical appliances you have . go to gas cooking , gas water heater , gas dryer.
At least you will escape the hidden municipal tax in the bill and wont have to do your laundry at "midnight".

Wow the wonderful world of green really doesn't work, big surprise. This is what happens when we have people driving an issue with fear and guilt rather then facts and allowing the free market to drive change you have celebrities and enviro advocacy pretending to be scientists and policy makers shoving this unreliable power (Wind and Solar) and subsidies down our throats all in the name. I'll repeat NAME of saving the planet. The truth is we have plenty of cheap power left its produced cleanly, minus the CO2 which is not a pollutant, yet we have shortages and jacked up 100% power bills.
Wait till October some of these green worshiping politicians are going to be looking for a job period.

My hydro bill has gone up 50% but not because of usage. Actually I have reduced my usage to under 500kwh per month from 800kwh per month but my bill is the same amount. Reason for this is that I moved to a smaller house but changed providers. Veridian in Pickering was charging me about 4.3 cents per kwh to deliver to my home. I now have Hydro One and it costs me 8.9 cents per kwh to deliver to my home. I wrote to the O.E.B as to why one provider is allowed to charge so much more than another to deliver to your home and just jot the usual BS. Although I have a smart meter I am not yet charged by time of usage. That means another raise in hydro as I am retired and home during the day when rates will be highest. McGuinty is history.

My hydro bills last October,November, for which at the time came every 2 months, DOUBLED. Then in December decided to send them every month. How can they justify all the hydro storage we have so excess when they sell it to the US real cheap and our bills are going sky high?? Why aren't we storing excess hydro and giving the people of this country reasonable rates? I hope McGuinty has another job lined up because I hope the people of this country kicks his ass out! Maybe he can go live in the US and get his hydro cheaper. I don't know how they sleep at night knowing that people lost good jobs, not coming back, and every thing from bills to food is getting alot more expensive. Won't be able to buy bread soon, but they want you to eat healthier and not be overweight. I think most politicans should be fired on the spot, not have to wait for a dam election!

When I ask WHEN is all of the canadian pepole going to take an stand? Not just sign an letter but go march on the streets? Get in VERY large crowds and tell the goverment to take back the hydro system and give us back our system we paided for (and still do) over the last 50 years? Hydro system is ours not private companys, it should have never left ours control EVER. What gave the goverment the right to sell it off? It was funded by our money not thiers, our tax money built it, kept it running, and we still paided to use it. Now an private company says they own it, and we still pay them to use it and pay an dept retirement charge? WTF is that? Where is my last 50 years of money I paid to keep it running? Not the money I piad to use it, but the money that was paid from the taxes to build and maintian it.
We need to stand up an TELL them the way its going to be!!!

My hydro bills have gone up this year. I have force air electric heat. I increased the attic insulation, insulated the unfinished basement, turned down the heat and STILL the bills went up. $300 to operate a 900 sq foot house for the month of February !! Heat is turned down when I am not home and at 19C when I am home, minimal lights on and turn computer off at night.
This is my home for retirement, I can see myself huddled beside a candle, wrapped in my winter coat.

I am sick to death of all these increases to gas, hydro, water and taxes. Every one of these are making big money, except the public. Stop your whining, get off your asses and start complaining to your MP,MPP and any government official you can complain to. BC residents complained enough the HST was removed. It can be done. We as the people must send a message to our goverments that enough is enough!!!!. Start building youself a new solar home and tell these big companies that they will have to find a new cash cow!!!

My hydro bill has gone up about 75% for the same useage. I dont know why. I am on equalized billing so the monthly amount used to change once a year. Now they change it every month. It has something to do with my smart metre and time of use charges. Dont bother phoning them to try and get an explanation - its impossible - the things they say make no sense at all.

I have not got my bill yet, however, I am dreading the day it comes. People seem to talk alot but there never ever seems to be any action taken. Now is the time that we as citzens of Ontario start to take action against this stupid government of Ontario. Lets not wait for the election, lets start now, to work hard making sure that the Liberals get kicked so hard in the ass, that they will have touble breathing.
With the coal fired generators that could have been motified to gas fired generators, of which we have lots of which would have generated cheap hydro.
It is believed that the stupid leader of the Liberals in Ontario has been promised a directorship with Samung for signing the large wind farm deal which none of his cabinet wanted. If this is the case then it really smells.
Now is the time to start our action!!!!!

My hydro bill for January increased roughly 75% from the previous bill, and we do not use any electricity for heating, had converted all light bulbs to the energy efficient brands, replaced the washer, dryer, freezer and stove with much more energy efficient newer models and run the diswasher only in the middle of the night!
Really glad to save about $17.00 (10% savings on the bill) cause I can probably cook dinner one night a week with that amount!

BELIEVED ME, I CHANGED EVERYTHING, BULBS ETC., UTILIZED ALL OFF PEEKS, STILL BILLINGS WENT UP 100%, AFTER I SPENT ALL THE MONEY, THIS IS A SCAM ! A SCAM !
