Would you still buy a Chrysler?
By Jason Buckland, Sympatico / MSN Finance
Mexico City, at least, has to be happy about this one.
The dominant story in yesterday’s headlines – of course – was Chrysler’s filing for bankruptcy protection and, while it gives Mexico a breather from constant reports the swine flu has turned its signature city into a bonafide ghost town, it also raises a key question for the auto maker going forward.
Would anyone actually buy a Chrysler at this point?
Barry Obama seemed pretty confident in the auto giant’s long-term success in his national address Wednesday night, but that hardly means much for the average customer puttying the idea of buying a car around in his hands.
The only thing worse than Chrysler’s sales seems to be its line-up of cars which, aside from the 300 and, I guess, the Town & Country, doesn’t exactly offer a set of wheels anyone will be jealous they didn’t get their hands on first.
But, perhaps remarkably, Chrysler dealers aren’t worried.
The Star reports business was as usual (likely, as usually slow) at dealerships across the GTA just after news broke that the company’s U.S. division had filed for Chapter 11.
Customers apparently didn’t care – “It doesn’t bug me,” said one – and dealers were content to put on a happy face no matter what the outlook.
To be fair, the dealers don’t have reason to switch careers just yet. Not only are local plants expected to stay open, but salesmen have the crutch that all warranties from new cars will be backed by the government, whatever state Chrysler finds itself in.
“In an era of government co-ownership,” the Star writes, “no one should worry about sending documents over to Queen’s Park or out to Ottawa simply to get repairs done under warranties.”
So, that’s going in the auto maker’s favour. But, again, this brings us back to our original question.
Most of the cars that seem to come off Chrysler lots aren’t exactly Chryslers, at least in their traditional sense. Dodge appears to have a more successful line with more desirable vehicles, and Jeep owners would rather make love to an electrical socket than be caught driving anything else. Yet is the Jeep Fraternity enough to keep things going?
Would you consider buying a Chrysler?

Well now that we own 2% of Chrysler/Fiat, I guess we best be supporting our investment and buy a damn car!
Hey Chrysler/Fiat make a quality fuel efficient car that isn't the size of a shoebox and I will consider purchasing one.

I wouldn't buy any car brand that is plagued by financial troubles even if the warranty is backed by the Gov't. Once problems plaguing the brand there are factors involved:
- there is no value to the car
- service
- parts
- Gov't programs take a long time espcially when it comes to payouts (Gov't promises are only words to calm fear and encourage consumer spending while they make it hard for consumers to reap the rewards after buying it)
Have no interest in buying a domestic car when their Union members are so forceful when they don't get their demands while crippling the economy or daily functions. The Union is over paid and under performing in the job while pumping out metal junks for the fooled consumers who buy them. When Union employees hide behind a wall of protection it makes them lazy. A pay cheque is all that matters for Union employees.
Junk for trash!

Absolutely! I love my 2006 Dodge Ram Megacab and I loved my 1997 Ram 1500 before that. No problems whatsoever and a beautiful vehicle all round.

Absolutely. Chrysler makes great reliable vehicles. Now with Fiat on board the small car market held by Toyota, Honda,Kia and Mazda will have true competition. The new Chrysler will again be the leader in the industry.

There is no way I would buy a Chrysler product. I amazed that anyone would given the alternatives available. If it is becuase of price that would be a big mistake becuase the trade-in value of these vehicles will fall off a cliff in years to come.
The mess the company is in now was a long time in the making. If they struggled in the past when the economy was booming, how can they recover when we have the worst economic condtions since the Great Depresson?

My parents owned several chrysler cars when I was growing up( 60's, 70's). They were comfortable, and reliable, unlike today's models. The company I work for has bought and leased several chrysler vehicles over the past 10 years. Not only are they unreliable (transmission, engine etc.), they are cheaply finished inside and are terrible in the winter. The 300 is useless in the winter, eventhough it has electronic stability control. The Grand Caravan we have smells like a bonfire when driving it (2008 model), because a heat plate below is defective. If someone gave me a Chrysler, I would try to sell it quick and get whatever money possible. In short, no, I would not waste my hard-earned money on any Chrysler product (new or used). p.s. They did produce good and reliable boats and motors in the 1970's.....what happened ?

I won't buy a Chrysler for two reasons. First being of there financial issues and the other is that they continually add new models and discontinue models just as quickly. Chrysler doesn't have any confidence in there models why should I have confidence in Chrysler?

Would I "still" buy a Chrysler? Never, and not because of the company's financial situation. I would rather walk than drive or be driven in a Chrysler product.

HELL NO!!!

I wouldn't buy a Chrysler because I don't care for their make and brands but it doesn't have anything to do with their financial status. I'm a GM buyer and wiill continue to do so. They do have an amazing line up of brands and did deliver what people wanted until the price of gas went through the roof. Gm isn't junk we've bought GM for over 30 years and have been generally happy custormers. We had one care with over 350 000 ks on it and ran virtually cost free. To those who think that domestic buyers get fooled and really fooled themselves by perception.
One case in point is the fact that Toyota has more recalls then any other car maker. Second, what about people being fooled into going on a waiting list to buy a Prius for 10,000 dollars over list when gas prices went through the roof. All these desperate people willing to buy at any price. To me that's the pinacle of greedy.
True, Unions were greedy and had way too many perks. That's an understatement. However, where is the outrage when referring to the public sector. They still get all the wages and benefits no matter what the economy and truly that makes me sick. No-one ever yells and screams about them. I know several hydro workers who take months off and make paychecks that even the unionized GM or Chrysler worker can only dream of. The plus for them is, that their business won't fail because they'll just bilk us for more money. Remember the debt retirement fund? Then there are also other public sector workers who are not living in the real world. I don't think concessions will ever be in their vocabulary.
When they restructure why not support their brand to rebuild our own domestic industry instead of someone else's. True Toyota does have a token plant here but remember those profits go back to Japan and I'm not in a habit of supporting an Asian country though that's hard to do these days.

Why anyone would even consider buying new car, ??? for resale value falls down to one half in first
year. You can't pay loan fast enough. I remember ignorance of so called profesionall salesman at local Chrysler dealer when i asked what diesel vehicles they have on the lot. He took me to Jeep
Cherokee at $$ 54.000.00 This idiot realy beleived he got me by the balls. Union Magots are real
threat to North American Industries. I will never ever buy Small Three vehicles with Union blood
suckers anywhere near. Lock them up, and let free world decide what vehicles people gone buy.
My family drive Japanese vehicles built here in North America. Patriotism will never exist here with
Union Magots Comunist thinking. That's Why People got fed up with North American Small Three
Vehicles. Have a nice day

As much as I would like to see my tax dollars make a profit, there is no way we would buy another dodge/chrysler.
Resale value is a joke, quality is poor, and service is best described by their name, "dodge".
Real question is why would pay 4 billion for 2% when cerebus only paid 8 billion for 80% before they were bankrupt. All this for 9000 jobs? Cmon guys, do the math and you will see we are paying too much for something that has next to no value.
All while the CAW makes fat dollars to build overpriced crap. Fiat has their own trouble and no experience with winter vehicles. (Not that chrysler does either)

While Chrysler has made significant gains in styling and bringing back some resemblance of the good old cars (charger, challenger, etc), their interiors are probably the cheapest in the industry and crack when you sneeze. They should be considered just throw-away cars. If you purchase one, don't look for resale value, just keep it till it falls into the ground which should be somewhere around 4-5 years.

I just bought my 5th Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep product and couldn't be happier!! All the cars that I have owned have been great runners. In fact, my brother in law is still driving my 1993 Dodge Shadow every day with no issues (other than regular maintenance).
No matter which brand you're going to buy, if you don't do the required maintenance, your going to have problems. Ask your mechanic about how many of their customers come in with HUGE repair bills for their 7 year old imports and then get ticked off!! You'll be surprised by the answers.

I bought a Dodge Nitro 2 years ago and I'm very happy with it. It has been a reliable good looking vehicle on gravel or paved roads. Lots of interior room, comfortable on long trips.

i have never owned domestic and i dont think I'm going to start now..and before anyone bashes me on not supporting Canadian wrokers.we have just as much foreign factories in Ontario as domestic.
Buying new is also pretty stupid, after 3 years the car lost more then 50% of its value.

I made up a long time ago that I would NEVER buy an automobile built by the CAW and the recent events have not done anything to change my mind. Chrysler is bankrupt now and will be in the future after they eat through the government money. We (Canadians and Americans) haven't bought anything other than a bit of time for this company. The secured creditors are going to be beat up for the sake of the workers. HA! You can do this once but then who is going to lend them any more funds?
Our governments try to fix corporations but most of the time the things they do just prolong the agony. Take AIR Canada as an example. It will continue to go through bankruptcy after bankruptcy until something profound changes and this does not mean government intervention. The business model these companies are using are made for a different time and must be discarded.
As Mark Twain said so succinctly: "If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got".

American car maker should admit that their car had bad quality, and do the home work of improving the easy broken parts. This is the only way they can stand up by themselves. If they want to survive by the help of other car maker the car maker should not be Fiat, it should be a Japan or Korean’s car maker. The reason is simple- American car maker and Fiat is Cola and Pepsi.

For sure I'd buy another Chrysler product. I've had GM for 20 years, and last time I went to get prices , the GM dealer couldn't care less if I bought another one, so I got a new Dodge Ram and love it. Anyone who thinks they'd be better off with a GM is nuts-They'll be the next to file for bankruptcy.

Still a fun of Chrysler. For more than 25 years I am driving just Chrysler and Dodge cars and I consider for the future to buy them to.
